
Koen Martens
Koen Martens lives near Ghent in Belgium and is a leading ostracod taxonomist. He has an M.Sc. from the Australian National University, Ph.D. from the University of Ghent and D.Sc. from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, where he is a senior researcher. He is also a professor at the University of Ghent. His main research interests are phylogeny, taxonomy and evolution of non-marine Ostracoda and science policy on the conservation of biodiversity in general. His experience includes:
- Editor-in-Chief of Hydrobiologia, handling close to 1,500 manuscripts each year
- Member of the editorial board of several other international journals
- Member of the freshwater sciences committee of the UN-funded biodiversity conservation program DIVERSITAS
- Author or editor of 10 books and about 580 scientific and popular articles on biology
